Tips for Selling a Home with Pets

Thinking of Selling Your Home? Have Pets? Tail Wagging Tips to Make the Process a Walk in the Park!

Even Pet Lovers Are Put Off by Pet Smells When They View a Home
We all know pets bring joy to our lives, but they can also leave behind evidence of their presence. Prior to showings or open houses, be diligent about cleaning up any pet hair, stains, or odors. Vacuum carpets, sweep floors, and dust surfaces thoroughly. Consider professional deep cleaning services to eliminate any stubborn smells or stains.Freshen up the air with pet-friendly scents, but be mindful of allergies and sensitivities.
Wash pet bedding and toys. Bathe your pets. Steam clean hard floors. Throughout the showing process, keep surfaces and pets clean and deodorized, and make sure that litter box is cleaned daily. If your cats will tolerate a covered litter box, invest in one.
Why it's worth the trouble: I've seen buyers refuse to consider an otherwise lovely home because they detected pet smells. Don't let your home get devalued or rejected altogether over something that could be easily prevented. Instead, keep your family's home fresh so potential buyers will feel that the home has been well cared for.
A clean, fresh-smelling home will make a great first impression on potential buyers and keep their attention focused on your home's best features.

What Do You Do With Your Pets During Showings?
While your pets may be the stars of your household, it's important to keep them out of sight during showings. Find a safe and comfortable place for them, such as a trusted friend's home or a professional pet daycare service. Not only will this prevent any potential mishaps or distractions, but it will also make potential buyers feel more at ease as they explore your home. Remember, you want buyers to envision themselves living in your space, and that's much easier to do without a curious cat or a barking dog trying to make new friends.
If it's out of the question to remove your pets during showings, one friendly cat can usually roam free. Dogs or multiple cats are bit trickier, and should be contained in a crate or a gated part of the house or yard.
Why it's worth the trouble: even the cuddliest dogs can be unpredictable when they have strangers coming into their environment. For liability reasons, it's wise to keep your dogs in a controlled space. Also, some buyers may be uncomfortable or very allergic around pets, and we want to encourage them to spend as much time as possible considering your property.
One important note: ALL PETS should ALWAYS be removed during an open house.
